Besides the occasional battle with the OR, internal SPD shift wars are one of the most common culture killers among instrument reprocessing teams. Gonorrhea surveillance study maps antibiotic resistance across Europe
For the first time, researchers at Wellcome Sanger Institute, The Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control have mapped the first European-wide genomic survey of gonorrhea antibiotic resistance in the sexually transmitted disease throughout the continent. The study showed that using DNA sequencing allowed them to accurately determine antibiotic resistance and identify incorrect laboratory test results.

Artificial enzyme fights infection
Scientists at RMIT University in Australia have developed an artificial enzyme that is activated by visible light to kill bacteria. Made from nanorods that are 1,000 times smaller than the thickness of human hair, the NanoZymes use visible light to create highly reactive oxygen species that rapidly break down and kill bacteria.

Microglia are key defenders against prion diseases
Prion diseases are slow, degenerative brain diseases that occur in people and various other mammals. No vaccines or treatments are available, and these diseases are always fatal.

The Joint Commission weighs in on point-of-use precleaning
The Joint Commission describes precleaning as the means of removal of visible gross blood, body fluids, and bioburden to prevent hardening of debris or the development of biofilm due to process delays. Precleaning applies to surgical instruments, devices, and supplies that are intended to be reprocessed based on manufacturer IFUs, meaning they are not single-use items.

New guidelines for GI endoscopy infection control released
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) issued new guidelines for infection control during endoscopic procedures to help minimize risk of infection transmission. The authors of the guideline stated that infections caused by GI endoscopes are relatively rare, but infections can be attributed to lapses in reprocessing protocols and defective equipment.

UCF nonprofit testing 3D printing prosthetic arms
A nonprofit that 3D prints prosthetic arms for children at the University of Central Florida is collaborating with an Oregon medical school to conduct clinical trials on the arms. Limitless Solutions announced it will team up with researchers at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland to launch clinical trials.

FDA approves new endoscopic device to treat gastrointestinal bleeds

Upgraded biological indicator provides 24-minute results for steam sterilization
3M announced that it has attained FDA 510(k) clearance for its 3M Attest Super Rapid Biological Indicator (BI) System for Steam, which now provides BI test results in only 24 minutes. The new 24-minute system is attainable through a software upgrade to existing 3M Attest Auto-reader 490 and 490H units.

The Joint Commission appoints new infection prevention and control director
Sylvia Garcia-Houchins, MBA, RN, CIC, has joined The Joint Commission as its new director of infection prevention and control in the Division of Healthcare Improvement. Garcia-Houchins is responsible for the oversite of infection prevention and control initiatives at The Joint Commission.

Rare tumor removed in first-ever robotic-assisted surgery
A New York man was the first patient in the world to undergo a complex, three-part, robotic-assisted surgery to remove a rare tumor from his neck. The robotic arms allowed surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania to gain access to the difficult-to-reach chordoma tumor.
